After observations and questions, one of the first steps in understanding the world around us is categorization. When we notice similarities between things or ideas, then we can group them, and begin to clarify our understanding. When we notice differences, that leads to comprehension of the complexity and range within each group.
The focus of the Themed Journals is on learning firsthand about the world. Given the examples provided on page 2 and 3 of each journal and the guidance given through the accompanying guide, the journalist follows a hand-eye-brain learning process by drawing, writing, and questioning their chosen examples within the theme. Completing up to five investigations, the journalist will have a deeper understanding of the topic and will have created a record of their learning for themselves and their family.
